I arrived in the city without scheduling my itinerary. That was a big mistake 🙄. Even though Kyoto is smaller in comparison to Tokyo, it has a wide variety of places to visit. That’s why, I recommend to have a look on a city map with the places to go. Select the ones that you want to visit and organize your tour taking into account the proximity between each place.
TAKE THE BUS INSTEAD OF THE TRAIN
Although the city has a good transport system, I advise to commute by bus. A daily pass will cost ¥500 per day (about 4,20€) and allow you to not only make savings but also enjoy the landscape 😉.
TAKE A WALK DRESSED IN KIMONO OR YUKATA
If there is a place in Japan to do it, that’s Kyoto!
PLAN THREE/FOUR DAYS TO VISIT THE CITY
According to my experience, Kyoto is not a city where you should last longer than 4 days. I don’t think that I would have enjoyed that much my trip if I had stayed more longer. If you are well-organized, these few days would be enough to discover and enjoy the former imperial capital.
TRY MATCHA
In Japan, Kyoto and Uji are the town ambassadors of matcha 🍵. As soon as you will arrive, everywhere you will be reminded about it through the multiple shops specialized in it. Generally consumed as tea, you will find it in any other form (cake, sweet, burger, tiramisu…). If you were not a fan, I’m sure that it won’t be the same after your trip 😉.
FAVOR THE BUS OR THE TRAIN FOR A TOKYO - KYOTO TRIP
For a weekend trip, in particular for the outward journey avoid doing it by plane. You would land at Kansai Airport (located in Osaka), which means that you would have to commute for more than a hour to reach Kyoto. During of kind of trip, don’t forget that time is precious 😉.
VISIT THE NEIGHBOURING CITIES
Kyoto has the chance to be well-located regarding cities such as Kobe, Osaka and Nara. You can be there in less than a hour by train. Besides if you have a tourist visa, don’t miss the opportunity to buy a JR Pass and make it profitable by visiting these places 🤗.
CYCLE
Kyoto is relatively a flat city. So if you are feeling sporty, cycle for a full immersion and to get the vibes of the city.
DON’T FORGET THE BAMBOO FOREST
As the result of my lack of time (and also organization 🙈), I did not visit the bamboo forest which I regret. So if you want to follow my itinerary, add this stop to your list.
I hope this post has been helpful to plan your trip in Kyoto. If you have any recommendation, feel free to share it.
